ADHD in Fort Collins: Missing the Mark?
Parents often ask why the number of children diagnosed with ADHD is so high (5-10%) in relation to other behavior problems. I recently came across a research study that provides one explanation. Researchers found that children who are young for their grade are more likely to receive an ADHD diagnosis.
It is natural for teachers to use available context (e.g., same sex peers) when setting expectations for a child’s behavior. This research study serves as a reminder that there are significant normal differences in maturation within an elementary school classroom. It cautions against using grade-level peers as the primary reference when inattention and hyperactivity are concerns. Too often the result is an incorrect ADHD diagnosis. No child should be described with ADHD or any other diagnosis that is not completely justified.
At NeuroDevelopment Center of Colorado in Fort Collins, our doctors safeguard against misdiagnosis of ADHD by using assessment instruments that go beyond subjective observation and grade-level comparison. In addition to ruling out other important factors that can look like ADHD (such as listening skills and learning difficulties) NeuroDevelopment compares a child’s behavioral characteristics with characteristics of other children who have similar birthdays. If inattention and impulse control are problems for your child (whether or not a formal diagnois of ADHD applies) we can provide drug-free solutions.
All the best for your child!
